Procedura nadawania stopnia

Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences (ICSC PAS) has the right to award scientific degree of doctor in the field of natural sciences, in the discipline of chemical sciences.
The current resolution on the assessment processes for an award of the scientific degree of doctor in the ICSC PAS can be found on the Institute’s BIP website (PDF) or on the Institute’s website.

“NEW MODE” processes for an award of the scientific degree of doctor (after October 1, 2019)

A candidate may apply for a scientific degree of doctor in the following manner:

  • in the mode of doctoral education
  • in the extramural (external) mode.

The mode of doctoral education applies to doctoral students of doctoral schools.

The extramural (external) mode applies to other persons applying for an award of the degree of doctor. As part of the extramural mode, the Act provides a special path for people who started his/her doctoral studies prior to academic year 2019/2020 and apply for a doctoral degree.

There are three groups of people who can apply for an award of the degree of doctor:

  • doctoral students of doctoral schools – mode of educating doctoral students (I)
  • People who have started his/her doctoral studies prior to academic year 2019/2020 – the extramural mode (doctoral studies) (II)
  • other people – the extramural mode (III)

Each person who intends to apply for a doctoral degree must submit an application to appoint a supervisor or supervisors or a supervisor and an assistant supervisors.

  • doctoral students of doctoral schools (I) submit an application immediately after starting their studies because the supervisor must be appointed within 3 months of a starting date;
  • people who have started his/her doctoral studies prior to academic year 2019/2020 (II) can submit an application at any time;
  • other people (III) – submit an application for the appointment of a supervisor before submitting an application for verification of learning outcomes, which must be positively resolved before submitting an application to initiate the procedure.

Persons (I) and (III), only, submit an application to initiate the procedure for awarding the degree of doctor. The application to initiate proceedings is submitted when the doctoral dissertation is completely ready, because the doctoral dissertation and other attachments must by provided with the application.

Persons (II – students of doctoral studies) do not submit an application to initiate proceedings because their proceedings were initiated automatically upon submitting an application for the appointment of a supervisor. Persons (II) when they have a ready doctoral dissertation, simply submit the doctoral dissertation with attachments. These people should write a cover letter (template below)

Before submitting applications, please read the Resolution of the Scientific Board on the assessment processes for an award of the scientific degree of doctor [ENG]

  • § 3 concerns an application for an appointment of a supervisor or supervisors, or a supervisor and an assistant supervisor. It specifies which annexes of the resolution should be used when submitting the application and what additional documents should be collected;
  • § 9 concerns the submission of a doctoral dissertation (thesis). It specifies which annexes to the resolution should be used when submitting the doctoral dissertation (thesis) and what additional documents should be collected
  • § 16 describes the Course of the assessment process for an award of the scientific degree of doctor.

The annexes can be found at the end of the above-mentioned Resolution of the Scientific Council. Annexes 1-4, possibly 4a and Annex 5 are required for the application to appoint a supervisor. Appendix 6 is an application to initiate proceedings for the award of the scientific degree of doctor.

By the statement included in Annex 5, you confirm that you are familiar with Article 186 of the Act of 20 July 2018 „The Law on higher education and science”, possibly also Article 179 section 6 of the Act of 3 July 2018 „Provisions introducing act – The law on higher education and science”.

“NEW MODE” ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Below you will find a sample title page of the doctoral dissertation (thesis), templates of letters and declarations that are not included in the Resolution of the Scientific Board on the assessment processes for an award of the scientific degree of doktor, and which may be useful when submitting a doctoral dissertation to the office:

  • Opinion of the promoter(s)/assistant promoter [DOCX];

  • Template of declaration that the submitted dissertation was not the basis for applying for a doctoral degree [DOCX];
  • Template of declaration that the subject of the submitted doctoral dissertation is not legally protected [DOCX].

In addition, please submit:

  • PDF of the doctoral dissertation (thesis) on DVD;
  • original documentation in paper version and scans on DVD;
  • additionally, one copy of the work must be submitted in a reduced and bound form (i.e. double-sided, four pages on one A4 sheet), intended for the ICCS PAS Archive;

ATTENTION! – submitted documents should have a handwritten initials (signature) on each page of the submitted document. Please, pay attention to provide your name(s) and surname(s) adequately to those written at your ID card.
