Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences (ICSC PAS) has the right to award scientific degree of doctor in the field of natural sciences, in the discipline of chemical sciences.
The current resolution on the assessment processes for an award of the scientific degree of doctor in the ICSC PAS can be found on the Institute’s BIP website or on the Institute’s website.
A candidate may apply for a scientific degree of doctor in the following manner:
- in the mode of doctoral education
- in the extramural (external) mode.
The mode of doctoral education applies to doctoral students of doctoral schools.
The extramural (external) mode applies to other persons applying for an award of the degree of doctor. As part of the extramural mode, the Act provides a special path for people who started his/her doctoral studies prior to academic year 2019/2020 and apply for a doctoral degree.

A degree of doktor shall be awarded to an individual who:
- holds a Master of Science or a Master of Engineering degree or an equivalent degree, or has the diploma referred to in Art. 326 sec. 2 point 2 or Art. 327 sec. 2, entitling them to apply for the award of a degree of doktor in the country in the education system of which the higher education institution which issued it operates;;
- achieved the learning outcomes for qualifications at level 8 of the Polish Qualifications Framework (PRK), where the learning outcomes in terms of the knowledge of a modern foreign language are confirmed by a certificate or diploma confirming the knowledge of that language at B2 level or higher;;
- has academic achievements including at least:
- 1 scientific article published in a scientific journal or in conference proceedings which, in the year of publication of the article in its final form, were included in a list drawn up in accordance with the provisions issued pursuant to Art. 267 sec. 2 point 2 (b), or
- 1 scientific monograph issued by a publishing house which, in the year of publication of the monograph in its final form, was included on a list drawn up in accordance with the provisions issued pursuant to Art. 267 sec. 2 point 2 (a), or a chapter in such a monograph;
- presented and defended a doctoral dissertation;
- met other requirements set by the entity awarding a degree of doktor.
DOCTORAL DISSERTATION
- A doctoral dissertation shall demonstrate the candidate’s general theoretical knowledge in the discipline or disciplines concerned, as well as the ability to conduct independent scientific or artistic work.
- The subject of the doctoral dissertation shall constitute an original solution to a scientific problem or an original application of the results of the candidate’s own scientific research in the economic or social sphere.
- A doctoral dissertation may consist of a collection of published and thematically related scientific articles, provided that the following criteria are met:
- the collection consists of at least three scientific articles published or accepted for publication in journals included in the list prepared pursuant to Article 267(2)(2)(b) of the Act, or referred to in Article 179(6) of the Introductory Provisions Act;
- the candidate is the first author and/or corresponding author in at least two publications included in the collection;
- the collection is provided with a title and supplemented with a description in which the candidate defines the research problem against the background of the current scientific literature, explains its originality and the method of solving it, discusses the obtained results, and presents the most important conclusions.
Rules for a joint award of the degree of doktor
- The degree of doktor can be awarded by the Institute jointly with other higher education institutions, institutes of the Polish Academy of Science, research institutes, or international institutes in a discipline in which each of these entities holds scientific category A+, A, or B+, including foreign entities authorized to award the doctoral degree in the discipline in which the degree is awarded.
- The Institute concludes a written agreement with an entity with which the degree of doktor is to be jointly awarded, laying down rules of cooperation, and in particular: the manner of confirming the learning outcomes, composition and manner of appointment of the doctoral commission and reviewers, manner, and place of conducting the defence, the entity responsible for the entry of the data referred to in Article 342 section 1 into the system, the model of a diploma if the agreement calls for issuing a joint diploma, method of bearing costs of the assessment process
